Why Buy it now orders lose their delivery date
If orders placed with Buy it now arrive with no date, or get wrongly refused at checkout, the date is probably being saved in the wrong place.
Add to Shopify for freeTwo places a date can be saved
Shopify can hold a customer's choice in two ways:
- Cart attributes belong to the cart. A date picker in the cart usually saves here.
- Line item properties belong to the item. They are sent along with the product when it's added.
Buy it now starts a separate checkout and doesn't use the customer's cart, so cart attributes never reach it. Only a date saved on the item makes the trip.
The false refusal
A picker can show a chosen date on screen without adding it to the product form. Add to cart may still seem to work, but Buy it now sends nothing. If checkout then requires a date, a customer who did choose one gets refused. You lose the sale and may never hear why.
What to do
- Put a date picker on the product page, above the Buy buttons.
- Save its value as a line item property inside the product form, so both buttons send it.
- If you also have a cart picker, keep the two in step so one order doesn't end up with two dates.
- Have checkout read the date from either place. Delivery Guard does all of this for you.
How to test your theme
- Open a product, choose a date and press Buy it now.
- Complete a test order.
- Open the order in your admin and check that the date is on the item.
- Repeat on your phone, as themes can lay out mobile differently.
Older themes
Vintage themes don't support app blocks on product pages, so a block picker can't reach the form. There, Buy it now orders have no date. Either remove the button or catch those orders after checkout.
